Gathered informally on the island just off Cannes are Nusch Éluard, artist and muse; Paul Éluard, the influential Surrealist poet; Roland Penrose, artist and collector; Man Ray, pioneering photographer, former lover and mentor of Lee Miller; and Ady Fidelin, dancer and model, who was Man Ray’s partner at the time. Together, they form a constellation of artists, writers, and muses whose personal and creative lives were deeply intertwined. Taken shortly after Miller’s return from Egypt, the image marks a pivotal moment in her life.
