This iconic photograph from 1937 by Lee Miller captures a moment of intimacy and creative exchange among key figures of the Surrealist avant-garde during a hot summer on the Côte d’Azur. Gathered informally on the island just off Cannes are Nusch Éluard, artist and muse; Paul Éluard, the influential Surrealist poet; Roland Penrose, artist and collector; Man Ray, pioneering photographer, former lover and mentor of Lee Miller; and Ady Fidelin, dancer and model, who was Man Ray’s partner at the time. Together, they form a constellation of artists, writers, and muses whose personal and creative lives were deeply intertwined. Taken shortly after Miller’s return from Egypt, the image marks a pivotal moment in her life. It was during this summer that she began her relationship with Roland Penrose. Miller and Penrose both photographed the picnic, capturing the carefree atmosphere of the group of friends immersed in an idyllic French summer.
Printed 2009, apparently numbered 23/30, with Lee Miller Archive and Studio 31 blind stamps.
